General settings: launch at login, groups & icons

HomeGlance keeps configuration light, but a few settings let you tune how the app starts and how the menu looks. Open the menu bar panel, click Settings, and switch to the General tab — you'll find them all under Behavior.

Launch at login

Start HomeGlance automatically when you sign in. With this on, HomeGlance is already in the menu bar and connected the moment your desktop loads — so your favorites are one click away without launching anything.

It registers as a standard macOS login item, so you can also see and manage it under System Settings → General → Login Items.

Group favorites

Use Home Assistant Areas as tabs when multiple areas are available. By default the menu shows your favorites as a single ordered list. Turn grouping on and HomeGlance organizes them into tabs based on the Home Assistant Areas your entities belong to — Kitchen, Living Room, Garage, and so on — sorted by name.

  • The Favorites tab is always there, showing the full list in your custom order.
  • Entities without an assigned area appear under an Other tab.
  • If only one area (or none) is available, HomeGlance keeps the standard list.

Tip: areas are managed in Home Assistant itself, under Settings → Areas, labels & zones. Assign your devices there and HomeGlance picks the grouping up automatically.

Device icons

Show icons next to devices in the menu list. Each row gets an icon that matches the device type — a bulb for lights, a thermometer for temperature sensors, a lock for locks — making a longer list easier to scan at a glance.

Prefer a more compact, text-first look? Turn icons off and the menu shows just the device names and their state badges.

Debug tools

Show in-app diagnostics and a Debug button in the menu. If you hit a bug or something isn't working right, turn this on to copy the logs and send them to us — the extra detail helps us track down the issue much faster.

Your data stays protected: logs are kept in memory only — never written to disk — and access tokens are always redacted.

Changes apply instantly.

All of these settings take effect immediately — no restart needed. Open the menu bar panel and you'll see the new layout right away.
